Our Story

Light me, Melt me, Smell me, Love me!

Welcome! Thanks for visiting us at Spilt Sugar.

We have been creating deliciously scented, hand poured soy wax candles displayed in Vintage Rustic Jars, Travel Tins & Clear Tea Lights since November 2013.  Located in the beautiful Sydney suburb of Alexandria, we have been inspired by the industrial areas of a bygone Sydney era and created a range that draws these influences into sophisticated and modern living.

We are passionate about our fragrances, sourced from the finest natural resources using local suppliers within Australia .  Spilt Sugar is all about offering unique, high quality and well made products that are affordable, we don't believe in overcharging for the finer things in life. Spilt Sugar is proud to be environmentally friendly and we only use the finest glass jars to home our candles.  Once you've finished your candle it can be re-used for many things, our personal favourite is preserving lemons or displaying some beautiful blooms.

We always say that some of the best gifts are ones that you can eat, drink or burn, because you can enjoy using them without adding extra clutter to your life. Any one of our candles would be a great treat for a hostess gift, a birthday party, or even a little personal pampering present for yourself. Because who doesn’t love a little indulgence?

Spilt Sugar candles need a little TLC.

Each scented candle requires some slightly different care.

There are some basic principles you can follow to make your spilt sugar candle burning experience, that little bit better.

spilt sugar candles are hand poured and may have small imperfections, every candle is a little unique. Any small bubbles on the surface of the candle will quickly disappear when the wax is melted.

Soy wax candles can sweat in warmer temperatures.

(Tip: Don't leave in the car on a hot day, they will melt)

General Burning Care

-Never leave a lit or burning candle unattended.

-Burn on a heat resistant surface.

-Always keep tea lights in a glass or fire resistant holder or container.

-Containers may become hot to touch.

-Never move a lit or burning candle.

-Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.

-Store candle in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight.

-Ensure flame is kept away from flammable materials.

-Keep wicks trimmed to 5-7mm in length to prevent smoking and carbon mushrooming. Re-trim the wick before every use.

First Burn

It's important on the first burn of any of spilt sugar candle to ensure that the wax melts evenly all the way to the edge of the container.

We recommend the below minimum burn times when lighting for the first time, to ensure you get the most effective burn from each candle.

-Tea Lights: 1 Hour

-Maxi Tea Lights: 2 Hours

-Travel Tins: 2 Hours

-Contemporary Range, Frosted Glass: 3-4 Hours

-Rustic Range, Small and Large Jar: 3-4 Hours

After Burning

Once you have blown or snuffed out your spilt sugar candle, please allow some time for the wick and wax to cool prior to moving. This can take up to an hour.

Trim any excess wick down to between 5-7mm in length from the top of the wax.

PLEASE RECYCLE: The beautiful thing about soy, it can be washed off or out with hot water. Rustic Range jars are a perfect container for small flower arrangements and other various storage options.

Before Burning & Re-lighting

Ensure the wick has been trimmed and follow other general burning instructions mentioned above.

Other notes

-spilt sugar wicks are made from a cotton core and will fray as they burn.

-A small amount of soy wax residue will remain in the bottom of each container once the flame has been extinguished.

-Burn & smoke marks may occur on the side of the containers.

Spilt your spilt sugar wax!

It happens, you've bumped you table, knocked the candle on the carpet, the wax has gone everywhere, DON'T WORRY!

This is what you can do.

-Grab some paper/kitchen towel.

-Wet the paper towel and place over the spilt wax.

-Plug in the iron and when warm, iron over the paper towel.

-Fingers crossed, the warmth of the iron on wet paper towel will soak up the soy wax. (Thanks to Corinne for sharing her experiences...)

Disclaimer: Please follow the instructions on the bottom of all spilt sugar candles to avoid any spills, fire, injury or hazard.

Longer Burning Tips

-When burning a Contemporary or Rustic range spilt sugar candle for longer than 3 hours, you will typically see a carbon ball build up at the top of the wick.

-As the candle burns the wicks flame will also typically grow, ensure each candle is burnt for no longer than 4-5 hours at any one time.

-When burning a Contemporary or Rustic Range spilt sugar candle, we recommend that they be snuffed or blown out frequently, and once cooled, trim the wick before re-lighting.

WARNING: Failure to follow instructions could result in Fire, Hazard or Injury.
